Why is it called Dump Cake?

The point of a dump cake is to put everything together and then bake it. If you’ve ever tried the viral TikTok cinnamon roll cake, you know that a dump cake is one of them easier sweets ever. Ingredients for apple pie

You can count the ingredients for this dump cake on one hand. Below is a quick overview with some notes on what you’ll need. Don’t forget to scroll to the recipe card at the bottom of the post for all the recipe details.

  • Cake mix – You will need a box of good old vanilla cake mix or yellow cake mix from your favorite brand.
  • Apple pie filling – I make this recipe with two cans of apple pie filling. You can also borrow the apple filling from your favorite homemade apple pie.
  • Butter – You will need ½ cup butter, cut into slices. A stick of butter is the simplest.
  • Oats – Oat flakes will give this cake the best texture. Avoid instant oats as they will be a little soggy.
  • Brown sugar – Mix with oats for topping.

How to prepare apple pie

It’s easy to get addicted to making a dump cake because it’s so damn simple and the result is always delicious. Here’s how to prepare this tasty apple pie:

  • Add the apples. First, pour the apple pie filling into a greased 9×13 pan.
  • Add the cake mixture. Then, spread the cake batter evenly over the apples. Spread the slices of butter on top.
  • Top with oats. Finally, whisk together a topping of oats and brown sugar and then sprinkle it over the cake. Do not mix.
  • Baking. Cook the cake at 180°C for about 50 minutes, until the surface is golden and the apple filling bubbles. Let the cake cool and then serve it!

Why don’t you make a Dump Cake?

Rule no. 1 when preparing an unloading cake is do not mix. It may seem a little strange, but skipping this step is key to getting a golden, buttery cake that’s gooey on the inside and fluffy on top.

Tips and Variations for the Best Apple Pie

There’s not much that goes into making this cake! Here are my final tricks along with simple variations you can keep in mind:

  • Shake the pan slightly after pouring the ingredients into the pan. This helps the cake mixture spread out so it bakes evenly.
  • Add the nuts. Mix chopped pecans, walnuts or almonds with oats and brown sugar to create a streusel for extra crunch.
  • Use another fruit. It won’t technically be an apple pie, but you can make this recipe with canned or frozen peaches, blueberries, strawberries, etc.

Should my dump cake be gooey?

Sticky, yes. Runny, no. The apple pie filling should be bubbly and warm as a cobbler. Letting the pie cool after baking helps the filling firm up.

Serving Tips

Enjoy this apple pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream (or plain homemade ice cream) and a drizzle of homemade caramel sauce. For even more autumnal flavor, try this Apple Cider Caramel Sauce or Pumpkin Spice Caramel Sauce. A swirl of whipped cream really kicks it up a notch!
