For those in a hurry: Microwave Rice

Cooking rice in the microwave is also a practical and quick alternative, but to obtain tasty and properly cooked rice it is important to follow some steps to ensure you cook rice in the microwave safely and effectively:

  • 1 cup rice (I use “type 1 needle” but it can be any type of your choice)
  • 2 cups of water (but be careful because the quantity may vary depending on the type of rice)
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil or butter (optional)

Wash the rice under running water until the water is clear to eliminate all the excess starch, it seems silly but this step helps a lot to prevent the rice from becoming mushy. Then, in a microwave-safe container, place the washed rice, add the water and season with salt. You can also add a little oil or butter for flavor.

Then cover the container with a microwave-safe lid or a plate that allows the steam to escape, but it is important to ensure that the steam can escape to prevent the water from boiling over.

Place the container in the microwave and cook on high for about 10 minutes. Once the cooking time has elapsed, let the rice rest in the microwave for about 5 minutes. Pay close attention to this step because this time is important for the rice to finish steaming.

Once the resting time has elapsed, carefully remove the container as it will be hot and mix the rice with a fork to dissolve the grains. Once this is done, test and if you think it necessary, reduce the power to medium and cook for another 10-15 minutes. Depending on the type of rice it will take more or less time, which may vary depending on the power of the microwave and the type of rice used.

    Tips for your rice:

    • Container: Use a container large enough to prevent the water from overflowing during cooking.
    • Waterfall: The amount of water may vary depending on the type of rice. Brown rice, for example, generally requires more water and a longer cooking time.
    • Proportions: The common ratio is 2 parts water to 1 part rice, but can be adjusted as needed.

    • Steam: Be careful when removing the container from the microwave, as the steam may cause burns.
    • Suitable tools: Use containers and lids suitable for microwave use to avoid accidents.

By following these instructions, you can prepare rice in the microwave quickly, safely and effectively, if you want to check it out, run and see how I'm doing.
